What is the ideal temperature to keep at home?

What is the ideal temperature to keep in the house?  Perhaps never before has the question been as topical as this year given the ever-increasing cost of energy and the consequent need to save on consumption.

How many degrees should there normally be in the house?

In Italy there is a  legislation on temperature in the home  (legislative decrees 412/93 and 551/99) which indicates how  ideal temperature 20 degrees , with a tolerance of +/- 2 degrees. This means that  the temperature in the house should be between 18 and 22 degrees .

These values are in line with what is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)  which has identified how  optimal temperature in the house is 21 degrees .

But which season do these values refer to?  Is this temperature good in both summer and winter?  The answer is no. So let's see the recommended degrees in the two seasons.

  • Ideal temperature in the house in winter : 21° C
  • Ideal temperature in the house in summer : no less than 6/7 degrees difference between inside and outside.

Relationship between ideal temperature in the home and health

Why is it important to respect the recommended temperatures?   The main reason is health.  The home is the place where we spend most of our time, it is therefore essential that it is a healthy environment with controlled temperatures and humidity.

The ideal temperature in the house at night and in the rooms

Of course the  recommended temperature inside the house  is an average, and to this indication we must always add further considerations that apply to the different rooms of the house. Let's give some examples.

In the kitchen we can keep a lower temperature as the use of appliances, such as the oven or hob, contributes to raising the temperature.

Another curiosity:  Is 16 degrees at home too low ? Absolutely not: in  rooms  we can set a  temperature even of 16° C  as  improves the quality of sleep .

However, if we have newborns, it is a good idea to keep the temperature in the house slightly higher, between 20 and 22° C , to prevent respiratory infections.

Advantages of the ideal temperature in the home

The advantages of virtuous behavior in temperature regulation are numerous:

  • Increased immune defenses.
  • Reduction of colds, bronchitis, headaches, skin and eye irritation.
  • Reduction in energy consumption  with consequent  savings on your bill . For further information on this topic, please refer to our article:  How to heat the house while saving .
  • Reductions in emissions into the environment . Our personal advantages thus translate into advantages for everyone.

How to know how many degrees there are in the house?

In light of what we have seen so far, it is therefore essential to have a clear picture of  how many degrees there are inside the house . So what is the best way to  measure the temperature in your home ? Without a doubt through the use of a digital thermostat or chronothermostat, which allows you to view the temperature of the environment in which it is installed on its display. But why stop here? Isn't it possible to control everything from a smartphone?

Is there an app to measure the temperature at home?

The answer is yes , as long as you have a  wifi programmable thermostat   installed. In fact, the device, communicating with the smartphone via WiFi network, transmits data on the room temperature and system status to the app in real time.

For this purpose, Seitron makes the Seitron Smart app available free of charge, which in addition to allowing remote management of the heating, allows you to view the room temperature in the app . The app works with our wifi programmable thermostats  hygge  and  Wi-Time Wall .

Winter 2023: energy saving watchword

The increase in energy prices that has characterized recent years brings the issue of  energy saving . In a  previous post , we have seen what Enea's advice is for saving energy. What emerges strongly both in that article and in this one is the centrality and importance of a  accurate temperature control . We could therefore summarize the key concepts in the following points:

  • Control and set specific temperatures  in each room using chronothermostats and/or thermostatic valves
  • Program the comfort and reduction temperatures  in line with the indications provided by the WHO, the State and Enea
  • Program the heating to turn on  on an hourly basis day by day, so as to avoid running the boiler when we are not at home.

These attentions, to which are added the  correct maintenance of the boiler and system , allow for considerable savings. To put them into practice, however, it is essential to equip yourself with a chronothermostat and program it smartly!
